THIS IS ME (SO FAR)
I haven’t written a CV in ages and the thought makes me cringe. How do I say what I need to say in one little document. No job is just what it says in the title - it’s always so much more and also how will people know who I am? I’m definitely not only my job, but a combination of so many experiences, work related and not, my friends, my family, my clients, my country, my mind, the books I read, the places I go, the media I consume and the often changing hobbies I have.
I finished my degree in Graphic Design in 2005 and hot footed it to New Zealand with big ideas but no visa and definitely no plan. I landed in (then) small town of Queenstown, the adventure capital of NZ . Needless to say graphic design jobs were hard to come by and I needed to get a job that would sponsor my work visa. I managed to get a job waitressing in a pub and went on to be a general manager there. I managed to freelance for the ONLY design house in town and then finally took over all the communications for the hospitality company, that owned five more restaurants across the South Island. Those three years passed in the blink of hiking, boat rides, snowboarding, music, wine, trips and epic scenery, but I missed South Africa, the people, the energy and the spirit. I missed home.
And so I left, the same week that they offered me permanent residency. But I had adventures to go on as I had booked a ticket back home with an open stop over in Thailand. I packed my bags and spent the next 8 months backpacking through South East Asia. I had (another ) crazy idea to make it on foot from Thailand to India, going through Loas, Cambodia, Vietnam, China, Tibet and Nepal. It was without doubt, 8 months that completely changed my life and I’m sure will make many more entry posts on this blog.
I arrived back in South Africa in 2009 and have been here ever since, I’m happily settled in Westdene, Johannesburg and am a happy dog and plant mom. Since 2009 I’ve worked in a number of agencies in various roles and also started teaching at The AAA School of Advertising in 2013. Currently I am a co-founder of a digital agency called Moonraker Creative, it is small and agile and we produce amazing content and digital campaigns that deliver results. I love being in this industry as it allows me to connect with so many different people and brands and I am constantly learning and exploring new and evolving technology.
The dream for the future is to continue growing, following new (and old) passions and to keep on exploring our beautiful country and the rest of the world. You can see a bit of my journey by following me on instagram here.
